Why Paragraph Structure Matters
Paragraphs are the building blocks of all extended writing. Each paragraph should present one main idea, developed with supporting evidence, examples, or analysis. When paragraphs try to do too much, writing becomes confusing. When they do too little, writing feels choppy and underdeveloped.
Paragraph Length Guidelines
Academic writing: 150โ250 words per paragraph is standard. Each paragraph should contain a topic sentence, supporting evidence, and analysis. Very short paragraphs (under 100 words) may indicate underdeveloped ideas.
Web content and blog posts: 75โ150 words per paragraph works best for online reading. Web readers scan more than they read, so shorter paragraphs with clear topic sentences help them find information quickly. One-sentence paragraphs are acceptable for emphasis.
Business writing: 100โ200 words per paragraph. Keep it concise but complete. Email paragraphs should be even shorter โ 2โ3 sentences maximum.
Creative writing: Paragraph length varies dramatically based on pacing. Short paragraphs speed up the pace (action scenes, dialogue). Long paragraphs slow it down (description, reflection). Use paragraph length as a deliberate pacing tool.
Common Paragraph Problems
The wall of text: A paragraph that runs 300+ words without a break is intimidating and hard to follow. Look for natural breaking points where the focus shifts even slightly.
The fragment paragraph: A paragraph with only one sentence (outside of intentional emphasis) usually needs development. Ask: can I add an example, an explanation, or evidence?
Topic sentence drift: If the last sentence of your paragraph doesn't relate to the first, you've drifted. Either split the paragraph or refocus.
